LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE

Jim began his law enforcement career in 1975. He is a state certified police instructor in law enforcement drivers training-pursuit driving firearms, shotgun, rifle, and self defensive tactics-custody control. He has been training police and reserve officers across the state for over twenty years. Jim attended several schools; Supervisor Training I and II, Leadership and Staff Development, Administration and Stress Management and Department Budgeting.

He joined the Guthrie Police Department in 1979, and rose to the rank of lieutenant and started the K-9 unit, which grew into two full time teams. After leaving the Guthrie Police Department, he worked for the Choctaw Police Department until 1997. While at Choctaw he and his K-9 partner Trux responded to the Alfred P. Murrah Building bombing. They were involved in the search and rescue and later the recovery effort. In 1997 he moved to the Okla. County Sheriff’s Office, the largest Sheriff’s office in our state.

Jim is presently serving as a Sergeant / Supervisor of the K-9 Unit. The activities of the K-9 unit include; tracking suspects that elude officers, locating lost persons, bombs, narcotic detection and demonstrations for public education. This unit currently has seven full time teams and is in the process of adding another. He is responsible for the budgeting, purchasing, and training of this unit.

Jim was voted Police Officer of the Year in 1992 for the city of Choctaw. In his law enforcement career, four times he has been awarded the Medal of Valor, 16 Meritorious awards, (9 for bravery, 7 for life saving), one was from The Committee of One Hundred in 1998, and over 35 letters of commendation.

PERSONAL BIO

Jim Daves and his wife Shelley are both members of the First Christian Church of Crescent. He has four children and two step-children ranging from 1 to 21 years of age.

Jim graduated from Guthrie High School in 1971, where he was active in sports and R.O.T.C. After graduation he joined the United States Army.

While serving his country he attended basic and advanced leadership schools. After being promoted to Sergeant he also attended basic Non-commission Officers Academy. While serving he was an A-Team leader, squad leader, and also served as a platoon Sergeant.

After leaving the military, he joined the Army Reserves serving with the 12th Special Forces Group(Airborne) out of Okla. City until 1990. Jim is a member of the U. S. Army Ranger Association and the Special Forces Association.

Jim attended college at Oklahoma State University, Central State Univ., and Northwestern Oklahoma State University majoring in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement and minoring in Sociology.

He is an active member of the Association of Oklahoma Narcotics Enforcers, Past President of the Fraternal Order of Police for 4 years, past Vice-president for 2 years, and past Treasurer for 2 years.

Jim is a 32nd degree Mason and has his private pilot license.

Jim was a coach and assistant coach in little league baseball, football and soccer in the Guthrie area for approximately 10 years.
